Climate Change Facts

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING

Whether you believe it or not. 99.9% of scientists agree that humans are creating larger swings in climate each year. Scientists are the ones that we must listen to. Not politicians.

Greenhouse gases are trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere.

When the sun’s energy is released to the earth, ideally most of it is supposed to be reflected back into space while the rest should be absorbed by the gases in the earth’s atmosphere to make it warm enough for us to comfortably exist. No greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will result in the earth being too cold and vice versa. However, the recent increase in the presence of greenhouse gases has resulted in an increase in the amount of heat being retained in the atmosphere which is in turn causing a great imbalance in nature’s cycles.

You, me, and every human is to blame.

Since the industrial revolution, the amount of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor) present in the atmosphere has increased by about 36% and unfortunately, it is still on the rise. This great imbalance we are creating is ruining our planet much faster than we think and if nothing is done soon enough, there just might not be an earth anymore.

The amount of carbon dioxide is at its highest in about 8 million years.

With the industrial revolution came an exponential increase in the burning of fossil fuels for heat and power. These processes have resulted in the highest ever recorded amount of carbon emissions in history thus accelerating the greenhouse effect. At this rate, if CO2 and other greenhouse gases continue to accumulate in the atmosphere, the planet would heat up beyond levels that most species of living things can survive.

The increase in the Earth's temperature may result in the extinction of approximately 25 - 35 percent of the Earth's animal and plant species.

Due to the increase in earth’s temperature, there has been rapid melting of ice caps in Polar Regions. In fact, the National Glacier Park which used to boast of about 150 glaciers now houses only 25 as of December 2015. If the trend continues, the park is expected to lose all the glaciers eventually. An occurrence of this magnitude would probably be the greatest recorded disaster especially for coastal regions and aquatic organisms that may be swept up to land.

On average, the sea level is expected to rise about four feet before this century is over.

There has been a 30% increase in the acidity of the world's oceans.

This is due to the large amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere which in turn gets absorbed into the oceans. if this is not checked, we risk losing our coral reefs as well as aquatic organisms that can’t survive in acidic environments.

Temperature records are being broken all around the world.

Even if the common man cannot test the acidity of oceans, he can testify that atmospheric temperature is at its highest ever. For three years in a row, temperature records have been broken all around the world. According to NASA, the year 2016 was recorded as the hottest year in history. With the greenhouse effect increasing drastically, more heat is being retained in the earth’s atmosphere thus increasing its temperature.

The combustion of one gallon of gasoline releases about 19.64 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

With the amount of number of gasoline engines in us today, that is a lot of carbon dioxide to be releasing into the atmosphere.

DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
ARE BURDENED THE MOST

More than 600,000 deaths occur worldwide, yearly, due to climatic change from floods, droughts etc. 94% of those deaths are in the developing countries.

Deforestation is a major contributor to climate change.

Because trees need carbon dioxide to for a great percentage of their functions, they end up storing large amounts of carbon as they grow. What this means is that the clearing and burning of naturally occurring forests, results in massive amounts of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. It also means that the amount of trees available to absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is also reduced.

EXTINCTIONS OF IMPORTANT SPECIES ARE INCREASING

The lack of care for the forest and the land has caused the extinction of important species. If we do not take conscious actions to preserve these habitats, humanity will be the cause of the extinction of important species that maintain climatic balance.

PEST AND ORGANISM INFESTATION

More than we know, the disruption in climate and various habitats have caused the migration of pests in the quest for survival, hence, we have a large infestation of pests and organisms such as red algae blooms that kill off the local wildlife.

EARTH IS ABSORBING MORE TEMPERATURE

The earth has its atmosphere absorbing 15% heat, from within; this is due to the greenhouse effect. It’s a runaway train.
